Season’s Eatings: 5 Springtime Superfoods to Boost Your Brainpower

Spring is here and that means longer days, warmer weather, and an April shower or two. If you’re prepping for the BCBA® exam, spring also means hitting the books and continuing your hard work. Supercharge your studying with this season’s crop of brain-boosting foods.
#1: Blueberries
Blueberries are always at the top of the superfood list– and for good reason. Not only are they a good source of vitamin C and K, but blueberries are also an antioxidant powerhouse. Specifically, the antioxidant compound known as flavonoids. Research suggests that flavonoids could improve cognitive function, and help with memory and learning.
#2: Strawberries
Another brain-boosting berry, strawberries are also full of vitamin C and antioxidants. The benefits don’t stop there, though. Strawberries are a great source of ellagic acid, a polyphenol known for its link to brain health. One study showed strawberry consumption improved memory and overall executive ability.
#3: Artichoke
Artichokes are packed with antioxidants, dietary fiber, and a whole host of vitamins and minerals. What’s more, they’re particularly high in folate, or vitamin B9, which is an essential nutrient for brain health and function. Studies show that folate may even play a key role in maintaining brain health as you age.
#4: Asparagus
While it may be a divisive vegetable, the health benefits of asparagus can’t be argued. It contains amino acids, minerals, essential vitamins, and may even help boost your immune system. Like artichokes, asparagus is high in folate, making it a smart addition to your springtime table.
#5: Peas
Peas are full of dietary fiber, as well as vitamins A, K and C. They are also among one of the best sources for plant-based protein. Though not typically thought of as “brain food,” protein plays a key role in brain function and studies show protein intake can help protect against cognitive decline.
