What is item analysis, and why does PTB use it in their mock exams?

  • Item analysis is a method of evaluating exam questions by analyzing how test-takers respond to each item. It reviews:
    • Whether a question is too easy or too difficult.
    • How often each answer choice is selected.
    • Whether distractors (incorrect options) function as intended.
    • Whether high- and low-performing test-takers respond differently to the item. If a question is missed at similar rates by both groups, it may indicate unclear wording, flawed distractors, or an issue with the correct answer.

Item analysis helps ensure that our mock exam questions are both reliable and valid. Without it, exams may include misleading, unclear, or poorly constructed questions.
