Test Your Descriptive Assessment Skills ➠ ABC Recording Methods

Question: What type of ABC recording, although more time consuming, is not at risk of inferred narratives? Answer: ABC Continuous Recording.

There are two types: “ABC Narrative” and “ABC Continuous.” With ABC narrative, there’s a lot of inference that’s possible because you’re essentially filling out those A, B, and C columns with the narrative of the experience. What happened before the behavior in your own words, the description of the behavior in your own words, and the consequences in your own words.

ABC continuous recording is a little different. There are these little boxes with specific types of antecedents, specific behaviors, and specific consequences, and you would check all that apply. ABC continuous is considered to be more time-consuming because it requires that you schedule a specific period of time during which to record this ABC type of data, versus the narrative, where you record when the behavior comes up. It’s not a specific time commitment; you’re just writing it down as it occurs.
