Level Up Your Understanding of Differential Reinforcement Procedures

Question: This is a schedule that provides reinforcement for emitting behaviors that are at or above a pre-established rate. Answer is DRH.

There are all types of differential reinforcement procedures: DRI, DRA, DRH, DRL, DRD, DRO, and they all sort of provide the reinforcement contingent on different things. With DRH, what we’re specifically looking at is to reinforce the client for higher rates of responding. This is a behavior that’s already in their repertoire; however, they’re just not emitting it enough. We can use a little more of it. For me, it’s things like going to the gym or eating more vegetables. For our clients, it could be something like conversational exchanges. It’s already in our repertoires, however, we want to reward/reinforce the client for exhibiting the behavior more. The criteria usually is a predetermined amount or anything above that is what gets reinforcement. Anything less is placed on extinction, meaning that the maintaining consequence is not delivered.
