August 8, 2024 Can a changing criterion design be used to evaluate shaping programs? For as long as I can remember, I have heard people say no, a changing criterion design cannot be used to evaluate shaping programs because shaping teaches new, novel behaviors. The changing criterion design looks at behavior that is already in the participants repertoire. But, these naysayers are only half right. You see, it depends if we are shaping across or within response topographies. If shaping across response topographies, then no, they’re right. We cannot evaluate the shaping program because this type of shaping means literally shaping a novel response that is not obviously in the person’s repertoire. The success of approximations are novel. Certainly the terminal outcome is novel. But here is the rub. There is another type of shaping: Shaping within response topography. In this shaping procedure, we’re shaping a behavior that is already in the person’s repertoire. But, there is this other measurable dimension of the target behavior that needs to be taught (shaped), like voice volume, or the magnitude or duration of a response. This means the behavior is not novel, but some other measurable dimension needs to be shaped a bit. This type of shaping can be evaluated using the changing criterion design because those measurable dimensions that we are shaping are the different criterion characteristic of the changing criterion design. For example, the client can already talk. That’s not novel. But we want to shape more of the inside voice. Each volume approximation is that criteria. We can see how different criteria impacts those desired voice volumes. Takeaway: Can can a changing criterion design be used to evaluate shaping programs? Well it depends. If it’s shaping within response topographies, then the answer is yes.
