April 27, 2023 We’ve been conditioned to think that conditioning is learning. You see what I did there? Now, it’s true for operant conditioning. A behavior occurs in the presence of an antecedent followed by a reinforcer more likely to occur in the future in the same conditions. These are behaviors we have learned to do, unlike our reflexive behaviors. Now we came out of the womb with those (thanks Mom). So what the heck is respondent conditioning? It’s not learning. And it’s not associated with consequences, which you need for learning. Respondent conditioning is about pairing antecedent stimuli, a neutral stimulus is presented with an unconditioned stimulus, which elicits a reflex respondent behavior. And because of this pairing, the neutral stimulus is conditioned to elicit that reflex. So meat powder elicits salivation. A bell does not. It’s neutral. Pair them together and the bell becomes conditioned to elicit salivation (thanks Pavlov). Now, here’s a hint: if it’s a reflexive behavior, it falls under the respondent umbrella.
