Dana Do’s: Using Stimulus Salience to Increase Studying Effectiveness

Let’s talk stimulus salience. As Behavior Analysts, we have to ensure that learning materials are meaningful and memorable and are not competing with more exciting or prominent stimuli in the learner’s environment. And when we create and use meaningful materials, our clients have a better chance of acquiring new skills. We know this works. There is empiricism behind this idea. And the point of the story is that ABA works and therefore, we should be using it on ourselves by creating study materials that are salient in your environments. It’s using all those fun office supplies that we Behavior Analysts love like highlighters, and Post-its, and great pens, and fun notebooks, and also using visuals, and drawings and pictures, and mnemonic devices like songs or goofy acronyms. Decorate your study life to help you acquire those task list concepts. The key is though, stimulus salience is individualized so create and utilize stimuli that mean something to you and only you. So decorate, highlight, create fun mnemonic devices, and enjoy studying. Because you know what else makes this stuff memorable? Having fun while studying.
