Dana Do’s: The Pros and Cons of Answering BCBA® Exam Questions Before Reviewing Answer Options

A student recently asked if I suggested trying to answer test questions before looking at the answer choices. Is this a good strategy? PTB is always looking for easy-to-incorporate strategies that are going to increase the chances of a correct response. Having given this one serious thought, the answer is “yes, but”.

Unfortunately, the strategy is not always possible, particularly when we have scenario questions that would require discriminating between unique answer options. So the first step in using this strategy is to learn to discriminate which questions would apply so this does not become a frustrating waste of time.

Questions that are based on standard vocabulary and terminology can be candidates for this strategy. There are two benefits:

  1. Study/test your knowledge: If, during practice mocks, you are able to reliably answer a question without the luxury of answer choices serving as prompts, that is a good sign that you know the topic. In behavior analytic terms, by removing the answer options, you’re fading prompts and performing independently.
  2. Exam day benefit, which you can absolutely role play during practice mocks: This is a timesaver/reinforcer. If you’re able to reliably answer a question without the answer choices present, you’ll have an easier time discriminating the correct option once you actually do look at the choices, without getting distracted or forgetting the key elements in the question, scenario, etc. It is also very reinforcing to find your independent answer in the answer choices.

Final takeaway: use this strategy but proceed with caution.
