Sitting for the BCBA® exam is the moment every candidate dreams of… And dreads. After months of preparation, hours spent studying, and a whole lot of hard work, it can feel a bit surreal when it’s finally time to take the exam. Ease your nerves and feel more prepared with PTB’s tips for testing day.
Prep the Night Before
Pack up everything you’ll need for exam day the night before so you won’t need to worry about it the day of. Lay out your keys, wallet, water, snacks, and anything else you might need in the morning. Do you have an outfit that won’t distract you? If not, choose something comfortable and make sure your clothes are easily accessible (and not at the bottom of the hamper). Review the BACB® examination requirements to make sure you didn’t forget anything crucial.
Avoid Last-Minute Studying
Cramming right before the exam may seem like a good strategy but it can actually be counterproductive. Research suggests that last-minute studying doesn’t lead to long-term retention and can increase stress levels. Instead, use the time before the exam to find your focus and mentally review the material you’ve already learned.
Get There Early
BACB® guidelines recommend you arrive 30 minutes before your examination appointment. Consider your commute (and check the traffic) so you can be sure you have plenty of time to travel to the testing center. If you really want to go the extra mile, you can even do a test run of your commute, so you’ll know exactly where to go and how to get there on the Big day.
Stay Positive
Sitting for the BCBA® exam is stressful enough as it is and negative self-talk can amplify any anxiety you may be feeling. Replace discouraging thoughts with positive affirmations like “I’ve got this” and “I will do my best.” Belief in yourself can go a long way in helping you Beat the Odds despite any exam day jitters.
Take a Beat Before You Begin
While timing is important, don’t rush right into the test. Take a moment before you begin to breathe, find your focus, and shake off the exam day jitters. You’ll perform your best if you can remain calm, cool, and collected during the exam. Remember: You got this!
