Dana Do’s: If All Prompts Prompt Behavior, What’s the Difference?

Why is discriminating between response prompts and stimulus prompts so hard? Here’s what I think.

When you read a scenario in which a prompt is described to have helped a person emit a response, we instantly think it’s a response prompt. Since, in fact, a response was prompted. Sounds like a rational conclusion. But actually, that’s not how it works. All prompts prompt a response. Both stimulus and response prompts impact behavior. But how they impact behavior is where the difference lies.

The goal of any correct response is to be correctly evoked by a specific and relevant stimulus. That’s the SD. When someone is learning a new skill, we want them to be successful so we utilize this thing called “errorless learning”. That means we do what is necessary to make sure that the client emits the correct response in the presence of that specific SD.

For example, if the SD is, “what’s your name?” The correct response is, “Dana.” But if you haven’t yet learned the correct response, you’re going to need some help. That’s where those pesky prompts come in. They are temporary extras that we add and then fade out when the client is able to emit the correct response without additional support.

So how do we tell the difference between a stimulus and a response prompt? Stimulus prompts help the client emit the correct response by adding something extra to the relevant stimulus. That’s the key word. And this relevant stimulus is the SD. This makes the SD more salient by doing something extra, like bringing it closer to the client, making it bigger, making it shiny, pointing to it. Then, this little extra stimulus is gradually faded out.

Response prompts also help the client emit the correct response, but the client is helped by increasing the salience of what the correct response should physically look like. This is done by providing a physical or verbal model of the correct response, or adding physical guidance to help the client emit the correct response. These extras must also gradually be faded out.

All prompts prompt behavior. The difference between stimulus and response prompts is in the how.
